Dive Into Danger: The Infamous Story of the Super Smash Bros. “Fish”

When you think of hazards in Super Smash Bros., what comes to mind? Maybe explosive items, moving platforms, or fierce boss characters like Master Hand. But seasoned players know that one of the most sudden and terrifying threats doesn’t wield a sword or a gun—it lives right beneath the waves.

Meet the Fish, an infamous stage hazard hailing straight from Nintendo’s classic arcade history.

Where Did the Fish Come From?

Long before it started terrorizing fighters on modern consoles, the Fish made its debut in Nintendo’s 1984 arcade and NES classic Balloon Fight. In that game, flying too close to the body of water at the bottom of the screen meant instant doom: a massive fish would leap out of the water, clamp its jaws around your character, and pull them under.

When Nintendo brought stages inspired by Balloon Fight into the Super Smash Bros. universe, they brought the dreaded Fish along with it.

Roles Across the Smash Series

The Fish appears on a couple of iconic stages, serving up surprise knockouts whenever players get too careless near the water:

  • The Summit Stage (Brawl and Ultimate): On this slippery ice-themed stage, characters can slide down to the bottom area near the sea. If a fighter stays in the water for too long, the Fish will pop up with a surprisingly detailed look to swallow them whole. While players can occasionally escape its path if they time their movements right, getting caught usually spells disaster.
  • The Balloon Fight Stage (Smash 4 and Ultimate): Paying homage to its pixelated origins, the Fish here appears in its classic 8-bit form. If you venture too close to the water’s surface, it will lunge upward and try to drag you down past the lower blast line. Fortunately, you can fight back by mashing buttons to break free—though escaping becomes nearly impossible if your damage percentage climbs too high!

The Fish as a Spirit in Ultimate

For collectors who want to honor this aquatic menace, the Fish even exists as a Spirit in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Classified as a two-star (★★) Spirit, it features the original artwork from the Japanese and European box art of Balloon Fight.

Why the Fish Endures

While it might not be a playable fighter like Mario or Pikachu, the Fish is a memorable piece of Nintendo history. It turns routine positioning into a game of high-stakes caution, proving that in Super Smash Bros., you always have to watch your step—and stay away from the water.
